About YMC ChromaCon — The Team Behind Continuous Chromatography

Inventors of MCSGP, CaptureSMB®, and N-Rich® — the twin-column processes now validated at GMP commercial scale at Bachem and Bristol Myers Squibb. Zurich-based, worldwide via YMC.

Our Story

ChromaCon began in 2006 with a question: why should purification be the bottleneck in biopharmaceutical manufacturing?

Our founders, working from deep expertise in separation science, saw that batch chromatography—despite being the industry standard—left significant room for improvement.

Their answer was continuous chromatography. Combining the advantages of counter-current movement and automated cyclic operation, this approach dramatically improved process economics while reducing waste.

What started as a research group grew into a company with a unique portfolio of process patents. By 2019 ChromaCon became part of the YMC Group of companies.

Our Mission

We exist to help biopharmaceutical teams purify smarter.

That means providing continuous chromatography solutions that genuinely outperform conventional methods—not marginally, but substantially. Our continuous manufacturing approach delivers 30-50% reductions in both capital and operating costs compared to traditional batch processing, higher yields, better resin utilization, reduced IPCs and eluent consumption. It provides more product from the same input material – or the same product amount with significantly less input.

Whether you’re working with monoclonal antibodies, oligonucleotides, peptides, or emerging modalities like mRNA and viral vectors, our goal is the same: give you the tools and expertise to move from development to manufacturing with confidence, and ultimately get effective treatments to the patients who need them.

Our Technology

CaptureSMB® optimizes capture steps by running two columns in a synchronized sequence, maximizing resin loading capacity while minimizing buffer consumption. The result: significantly lower cost of goods for high-value molecules.

MCSGP together with AutoPeak® dynamic process control, tackles complex polishing separations where conventional methods struggle. It achieves high purity and yield simultaneously—particularly valuable for closely related impurities that traditional chromatography can’t cleanly resolve.

These processes run on our Contichrom® platform. The Contichrom CUBE—a twin-column FPLC development system—lets teams evaluate multiple continuous processes and select the best approach for any given separation challenge. Processes developed on the CUBE scale directly to our GMP-capable manufacturing system lines, the Contichrom PILOT & TWIN. Our ChromIQ® software provides intuitive control and comprehensive data management throughout.

How We Work

We’re not a company that ships equipment and disappears. Continuous chromatography represents a meaningful shift in how purification works, and we’re committed to ensuring our clients succeed with it.

That commitment shows up in several ways: feasibility studies to assess whether our technology fits your specific challenge, advanced process modeling to optimize before you run, system rentals for evaluation, and hands-on workshops to build your team’s expertise. We offer preventive maintenance and repair services to keep your continuous chromatography systems in the best possible shape. Our ISO certification reflects the quality standards we maintain across system design, manufacturing, and ongoing support.

When you’re ready to scale, our partnership with YMC America ensures seamless transition from lab-scale development to GMP manufacturing. We view the relationship as a true partnership—your separation challenge becomes our problem to solve together.

Looking Forward

The biopharmaceutical landscape is shifting. Molecules are becoming more complex. Manufacturing demands are intensifying. Sustainability pressures are real.

We see continuous chromatography as central to meeting these challenges—not as a niche technique, but as the future standard for efficient, sustainable purification. The economics support it: 30–50% lower operating costs make continuous manufacturing increasingly compelling as the industry scales production of next-generation biologics and chemical medicines.

Our ongoing development work focuses on extending our technologies to emerging modalities while continuing to refine performance for established therapeutic classes. The goal hasn’t changed since 2006: enable more efficient, more sustainable production of medicines that improve lives. We’re just getting started.
